Juneteenth is on June 19 and offices around Oregon will be closed in observance of the federally recognized holiday.

Juneteenth, known as America’s Second Independence Day, was officially recognized as a federally holiday in 2021 as a way to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, more than 250,000 enslaved Black people were freed in Galveston Bay, Texas after Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived with 2,000 Union troops to declare their freedom.

Local and state offices will be closed on Juneteenth, including courts. Emergency services, like police, fire and ambulances, will be staffed.

Are banks open in Oregon on Juneteenth?

Many banks typically close on federal holidays. Chase, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, Citizens and Umpqua are among some of the financial institutions that observe Juneteenth, according to their holiday calendars.
