Stephanie White provides update on Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, DeWanna Bonner

INDIANAPOLIS – In addition to Caitlin Clark’s likely return Saturday, Sophie Cunningham should also be available for the Indiana Fever, coach Stephanie White said. Cunningham, who reaggravated a right ankle injury on May 30, has been out for about two weeks.

“I think she’s going to be ready to roll as well,” White said Friday. “Sophie looked really good. You know, her timing was good. Getting back into game, rhythm and timing is the most important thing, and being able to change directions. I thought she looked good. She’s had really good workouts throughout the course of the week, and then it’s just been reintegrating into live action. So they both look good.”

Cunningham has had bad luck with that ankle this season, injuring it twice since the start of training camp in late April. She first injured it on May 10 against the Dream, missing around two weeks before returning on May 22. She then injured it again against the Sun on May 30, forcing her out for another two weeks.

In all, she’s missed five of the nine games the Fever have played so far this season.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been cleared to play after missing the past five games with a quadriceps strain.

“It’s always frustrating, you want to be out there with them. You want to help them as much as you can,” Cunningham said on Thursday. “But I think you have to find the positive in everything. And so when you go through an injury like this, it can be hard on the mental because one day you’re ready, and the next day it’s swollen, you can’t go. And so I was preparing me just to stay ready. And that’s what this league’s all about.”

That delayed swelling has been the issue with Cunningham’s injury, especially as it was a reaggravation. Cunningham said Thursday she’s felt ready to go for a while, but the Fever wanted to be as cautious as possible in hopes of not injuring it a third time.

Now, after stacking multiple good days on top of each other, Cunningham feels prepared. Both she and Clark, who has been out with a quad strain for three weeks, will be available on Saturday, barring any late regression on Friday night.

“They’re a resilient group,” White said of her team. “They’re a competitive group. You know, we learned that from day one at training camp. It’s just their ultimate competitiveness. They’ve been thrown to the fire early, these young players have, and they understand what it takes and to go through what we’ve gone through already, with injuries and setbacks and hardships and all the other things. To still come in every day with this kind of energy, this kind of competitive spirit, shows the character of this group.”
