Angela Suggs, 55, is accused of racking up $24,000 in charges while misusing a business credit card, per FDLE. She turned herself in at the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday.

The investigation into Suggs began in November, just two months after she was announced as FAMU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics. But according to FDLE, the allegations are actually linked to the role she had directly before taking charge of FAMU Athletics.

Suggs was previously the president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF), a nonprofit focused on promoting Florida’s sports industry. It’s also “a direct-support organization operating under the Florida Department of Commerce,” per FDLE.

The Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General sent FDLE “a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General with an audit of Suggs’ FSF business credit card purchases and corresponding travel reimbursements.”

That led to FDLE investigators finding that Suggs allegedly used her business credit card for the nonprofit on personal expenses, including visits to casinos during business trips.

“The investigation revealed that Suggs misused her FSF-issued credit card to make wire transfers and cash withdraws and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling more than $24,000.”

Additionally, FDLE alleges that Suggs went on to falsify travel vouchers by “coding the unauthorized charges as meals.”

The press release says that when asked, the athletic director claimed the alleged “unauthorized charges” were business meals or that the costs were “accidentally charged to the business card.”

She also allegedly “failed to fully repay FSF for her personal expenditures,” per FDLE.

More Tallahassee news:

FAMU Interim President Timothy Beard said in a statement that the university is aware of the allegations connected to her work with a “former employer.”

“While the matter is unrelated to her duties as an employee at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation and will respond in the future as appropriate,” the statement said.

FDLE says they are still actively investigating the athletic director. Suggs is charged with the following, per FDLE:

  • One felony count of grand theft
  • One felony count of scheme to defraud
  • Four misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers

The athletic director’s bond was set at $13,500, per FDLE. Leon County court records show she bonded out of jail just after 2:30 p.m. Monday.
