Claire Lewis (CL), Chief Operating Officer of Optimum Finance, has been immersed in the invoice finance industry since her sixth-form days, starting out through a work experience placement that unexpectedly launched a near three-decade career. With a deep understanding of the sector and a passion for mentorship, Claire has helped build and scale two startups in the industry, including Optimum itself.

In this exclusive interview with Leasing Life Editor Alejandro Gonzalez (AG), Claire reflects on her career journey, offers insights into the evolution of invoice finance, and shares advice for those looking to carve out a successful path in the sector.

CL: I’ve been in invoice finance since I was 17. I was fortunate to get a two-week work experience opportunity at a finance company while studying for my A-levels and I’ve stayed in the industry ever since.

My first task was stuffing over 2,000 envelopes with end-of-month customer statements. But I paid attention to what was happening around me and was fascinated by the industry’s pace and purpose. After that placement, they offered me a full-time role. With a bit of negotiation with my parents, I accepted and here I am 28 years later!

I’ve worked at several providers across the sector and had the privilege of being part of two businesses from their launch. Most recently, I helped launch Optimum Finance in 2017. We started with no clients and, like many startups, faced big challenges including Covid. But we’ve come through stronger than ever, with a fantastic team focused on delivering outstanding service.

CL: Honestly, no one day is the same, which is exactly why I love what I do.

As COO, my focus is ensuring the business runs smoothly, our clients are supported, and that we manage operational risk effectively. It can be demanding, but it’s hugely rewarding. I’m deeply involved in both client servicing and oversight of our risk processes.

At Optimum, we actively encourage fresh perspectives and innovative thinking. Having been here since day one, I’m incredibly proud of the positive, agile culture we’ve created. It’s a key part of what makes us unique.

CL: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years, especially since becoming a parent is the importance of feedback. Celebrating wins and acknowledging effort consistently helps people feel valued, and I think we do that really well here.

Story Continues

Mentorship is a personal passion of mine. I joined this industry at 17 and was given a chance that changed my life. Now, I want to pay that forward. At Optimum, we invest in people. We want it to be a place where talent is nurtured and careers can flourish. Watching team members grow and succeed is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.

CL: The industry has changed dramatically over the past 28 years. When I started, leadership teams were rarely diverse. Today, the picture is much brighter.

At Optimum, 60% of our senior leadership team is female, which is something I’m really proud of. Diversity brings fresh thinking, empathy, and adaptability, which are critical in today’s financial services landscape. We’re not just better for it, we’re stronger for it.

CL: It’s an incredibly rewarding and inclusive industry. No two days, or clients are the same, and that variety keeps it interesting.

Some clients want a light-touch service, while others need more hands-on support. Often, we’ll go beyond financing, recommending accountants or consultants if they need additional help. It’s about truly understanding the businesses we support and helping them succeed.

Invoice finance isn’t just about numbers, it’s about relationships, solutions, and real-world impact. If you’re curious, motivated, and people-focused, it’s a brilliant career path and one I’ve absolutely loved being part of.
