Mayor Keith Wilson highlighted the need for acclimatization, stating, “Heat comes fast, and it takes weeks to acclimate. So, I just ask that you don’t go over and exert yourself today. Use the shade, use the air conditioning, use the libraries.”
Wilson mentioned that while libraries are currently open, efforts are being made to open splash pads, which will take a few days. He advised residents to take it easy as the city experiences warmer nights, which poses additional challenges.
In response to the heat, Oaks Park closed early at 4 p.m. to ensure the health and well-being of its staff. Visitors affected by the closure received “bounce-back” bracelets, allowing them to return another day to complete their visit.

Portland and Midland libraries are extending their hours until 8 p.m. to provide a cool refuge for residents. Although cooling centers have not yet been opened, local libraries are stepping in to help prevent heat-related illnesses.
The county warned that the first stretch of high-heat days of the year poses a greater risk of health impacts, as bodies have not yet acclimated to the high temperatures.
Residents are advised to stock up on fans, air conditioners, and sunblock curtains to avoid overheating.
Signs of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and muscle cramps. Officials recommend resting in a cool area, drinking plenty of fluids, or taking a cool shower if symptoms occur.
