Who is eligible for Opportunity Card Germany?

German Opportunity Cards are available to holders who with specific academic qualifications that are fully recognised in Germany. How to calculate points for Germany Opportunity Card?

4 points for a foreign vocational qualification that can be recognised under German standards, even if additional qualifications will be required later.

3 points for at least 5 years’ professional experience within the last 7 years or good German language skills at B2 level.

2 points for ‘satisfactory’ German language skills (B1 level), 2 years’ professional experience within the last 5 years, and being under 35.

1 point for ‘adequate’ German language skills (A2 level), a previous stay of at least 6 months in Germany within the last 5 years, aged 35-39, C1 English skills.

One point is also awarded to applicants who are not over 40 years old and for a previous stay in Germany (at least six months). You must provide documented proof of this. Previous stays as a tourist do not count.

To get an Opportunity Card, skilled workers must prove that they can afford to live in Germany for up to one year while they find work without requiring state benefits.

Within a year of finding employment in Germany, holders of Opportunity Cards can apply for permanent authorization to work in Germany, such as an EU Blue Card, at the local Immigration Office in their new home.

The German Opportunity Card 2025 permits workers to work for 20 hours per week. The validity of the card is for one year. After that, individuals have to renew the card or exit the country and apply from their native nation.
