Left-hander José Quintana (4-1, 2.77) starts for the Brewers while right-hander Stephen Kolek (3-1, 3.47) counters for the Padres.

Brewers not getting the breaks

Kolek walked Christian Yelich with two outs in the sixth, and Yelich advanced to third on a William Contreras single.

San Diego countered with tough left-hander Adrian Morejon to face Sal Frelick, and two pitches into the at-bat Frelick chopped a ball that hit behind the plate and then bounced onto the plate.

Frelick stayed put, but catcher Elias Díaz pounced on the ball and threw down to first with home-plate umpire Jacob Metz signaling fair ball.

Manager Pat Murphy came out for an explanation, but nothing doing for the Brewers, who now have gone 15 straight innings without scoring.

Another quiet start for the offense

Milwaukee was in position to grab an early lead when Frelick singled to lead off the bottom of the second and Isaac Collins drew a one-out walk, only for Caleb Durbin to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.

A leadoff single by Joey Ortiz in the third was erased two batters later by the exact same twin killing.

San Diego, meanwhile, had runners on against Quintana every inning except the third and the pressure paid off in the fourth when Jackson Merrill singled, Jose Iglesias walked and with two outs Díaz singled to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Quintana allowed a pair of singles in the fifth but got out of the inning to finish his night at 101 pitches. He allowed five hits, three walks and struck out four.
