Maria was on a nine-match losing streak ahead of the WTA 500 tournament, with the 37-year-old coming through qualifying to win the biggest title of her career.

The German had to beat some big names to win the Queen’s title including Australian Open champion Madison Keys, before beating another American Amanda Anisimova in the championship match.

After the conclusion of the women’s tournament at Queen’s, it is now the turn of the men and world number 13 Frances Tiafoe has given his verdict on what he thinks of the WTA playing on the courts before the ATP event.

What Frances Tiafoe thinks about women playing at Queen’s this year

One of the big topics of discussion surrounding the men and women now both playing at Queen’s is how the courts will fare, with the grass deteriorating over time played on it.

While some would see this as a negative thing, former British number two Naomi Broady has revealed that Tiafoe told her he was pleased that the women played first as he thinks it could prevent the surface from being so slippery when the ATP tournament begins.

“I actually bumped into Frances Tiafoe who was out watching the women’s final just now and asked him how the grass were looking, because of course it’s a live surface so to have the tournaments back-to-back I was quite curious how the men would feel about it,” Broady said on The Tennis Podcast’s broadcast on Tennis Channel.

“Frances actually says he prefers it, because the grass of course is known to be quite slippery behind the baseline in the first couple of days as it plays it in, so the women have sort of done that job for the men. So, I think we are going to see fingers crossed fewer slips and falls.”

The grass courts being more worn out is something that is often seen during the second week of Wimbledon, a place where Tiafoe will be looking to reach.

Frances Tiafoe’s potential run to the Queen’s Club Championships title

This is the first tournament for Tiafoe since he reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the first time.

It will be his seventh main draw appearance at the Queen’s Club Championships, where he is twice a quarter-finalist.

Tiafoe is the seventh seed at this year’s tournament and will play British wildcard Dan Evans in the first round.

The big serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard could be a potential second round match for Tiafoe, before he could then face some of his fellow seeded players.

Second seed and British number one Jack Draper could be Tiafoe’s opponent if he reaches the quarter-final, with Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur some of the other players he could come up against further along in the tournament.

Tiafoe will play Evans in his first round match on Monday, June 16, in a 10th meeting between the pair.

The American leads the head-to-head 6-3, but has never played a match against Evans on grass before.
