Sam Burns speaks to reporters following the third round of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club Saturday, June 14, in Oakmont, Pa.

Play was suspended during the fourth round of the 2025 U.S. Open, making it twice over the four-day tournament that inclement weather caused a delay at Oakmont.

The first suspension occurred as players were wrapping up the second round Friday night, making 13 players finish their rounds and finalize the cut line Saturday morning. AccuWeather predicted a high of 66 degrees with occasional rain and drizzle in the forecast today in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Winds are expected to blow out of the east-northeast at 5-10 mph. The USGA announced ticket refunds will be available for fans who didn’t want to brave the elements.

If play drags into Monday, there’s an 80% chance of rain then, as well.

Here’s what we know about the rain delay at the U.S. Open, including USGA ticket policies:

Was the US Open suspended?

Yes. Rain moved into the area and, with reports of lightning in the area, play was suspended at approximately 4:02 p.m. Eastern as water began pooling on several greens.

When will US Open start again?

It is unknown at this point when the third round will resume at Oakmont.

Do golf tournaments get canceled because of rain?

If it’s just raining, no. Golfers will play through rain. However, there are two big exceptions:

  • Lightning: If there is lightning in the area, play will be suspended until conditions are deemed safe. On the PGA Tour, players can also decide if conditions are unsafe.
  • Pooling: If water is building up on the greens, tee boxes or fairways, play will be suspended until the water soaks into the ground or the play areas are cleared.

USGA weather policy

The USGA, which operates the U.S. Open, says meteorology staff will be on site monitoring conditions at the U.S. Open. Important weather-related information will be relayed to spectators through special alerts on leaderboards and video boards. The USGA weather policy has four stages of color-coded alerts:

  • Blue: Weather advisory. Specific weather conditions require certain precautions.
  • Yellow: Weather watch. Dangerous weather is possible.
  • Orange: Weather warning. Dangerous weather is approaching. Fans should be prepared to take shelter or return to their vehicles.
  • Red: Weather warning. Dangerous weather is imminent. Fans should take immediate precaution to ensure their safety. Fans must clear all grandstands.

A suspension of play will be announced by one prolonged blast from an air horn. If play is suspended, fans must clear grandstands immediately.

If there is a lightning in the area, the USGA asks fans to avoid open areas, hilltops, high places, isolated trees, golf carts and wire fences. Fans should seek shelter immediately.

Play will resume as soon as conditions are deemed safe.

What happens to US Open tickets if it rains?

The U.S. Open will offer ticket refunds to fans who choose not to attend Saturday because of the wet conditions, the USGA announced. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced fans will have until Thursday, June 19 to request a refund.

The USGA ticket policy does not allow for re-entry, refunds or exchanges in most cases in the case of inclement weather. However, there are exceptions on a case-by-case basis. The USGA may honor tickets for an affected day at a later day of the event, but any Gallery, Trophy Club or hospitality tickets for the affected day will grant admittance only to the main grounds. Any potential refunds will only be made available to those who bought tickets through the USGA.

If play is suspended, fans are asked to check usopen.com for updates on refund or exchange eligibility for their tickets.
