Red Sox’s Alex Cora Offers Major Rafael Devers Position Update

Rafael Devers will be staying put for the Boston Red Sox.

It’s been a major source of tension in and around the organization, as many have wondered whether staying at his current position — designated hitter — is the best option for the team.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes it is.

“We talk (about taking reps on defense), but he’s my DH,” Cora told reporters on Saturday, per Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

Does he expect that to continue for the rest of the season?

“Yes,” Cora said.

Devers has been taking reps at shortstop before games, but that has been explained as a way to keep him active while sticking in the box during games. The Red Sox also don’t have much of a need for him on the corners of the infield, as Marcelo Mayer has held things down at third base, while Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez fill in at first base.

It’ll remain a conversation — because… well, these things interest people.

Boston seems to be comfortable with where it’s at on the infield, however. We just have to wait and see what they’ll do in the outfield — with Wilyer Abreu’s incoming return causing an overflow alongside Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony.
