Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt‘s attempt at getting back into the division’s title mix again fell short at UFC Atlanta.
Facing another tough contender in Raoni Barcelos, Garbrandt got off to a quick start with a big knockdown in Round 1, expressing his trademark showboating after the early highlight. But Garbrandt’s pace and pressure waned as the fight went on, and Barcelos had Garbrandt backpedaling in Rounds 2 and 3.
After a big takedown by Barcelos late, Garbrandt wasn’t able to rally, despite some big exchanges on the feet with seconds left in the fight. Garbrandt went on to lose by unanimous decision to Barcelos for his second consecutive defeat.

Retirement calls ramp up after Cody Garbrandt’s loss at UFC Atlanta
Garbrandt returned to the Octagon for the first time since a submission loss to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300 last year. He’s lost four of his last six fights overall, including a one-off flyweight matchup with Kai Kara-France at UFC 269.
Here’s what UFC fans had to say about Garbrandt’s seventh loss of his last ten fights.
“Just let PFL pay you a bag and live the best life you can,” one fan wrote on X.

“Retirement,” another said.
“Bareknuckle. No other answer.”
“Call Dominick Cruz out of retirement.”
“Might be retirement or one last battle.”
“Retire or become the new Tony.”
“Retire.”
“Probably slip away like his hair line.”
“Retire he just don’t have enough in him anymore to compete for 3 rounds. He always looks good in Round 1.”
“Gate keeper.”
“A hair cut and then retirement.”
“Cody no Fight.”
Since defeating Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 for the UFC bantamweight title, Garbrandt has dropped seven of his last ten fights, including losses to TJ Dillashaw, Rob Font, and Pedro Munhoz. The 33-year-old began his career with an undefeated 11-0 record.
Cody Garbrandt’s biggest rival watched him suffer another defeat at UFC Atlanta
Coincidentally, Cruz was on the call for Garbrandt’s loss at UFC Atlanta, and questioned his former rival’s gameplan for the fight. Garbrandt’s early combinations dissipated as the fight went on, in contrast to the pace he put on his opponents during the beginning of his UFC tenure.
Cruz announced his retirement after pulling out of a scheduled fight with Font at UFC Seattle earlier this year. He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest UFC bantamweights in MMA history.
Garbrandt could potentially be on a similar path after another setback at UFC Atlanta. The former titleholder has won consecutive fights just once since 2016.
