See the ‘Get Hard’ cast, then and now

  • Get Hard follows a wrongly-convicted rich man who asks a car wash owner to prepare him for prison.
  • The crime comedy premiered at SXSW on March 16, 2015, and hit theaters on March 27, 2015.
  • The cast includes Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Alison Brie, and Craig T. Nelson.

Can you believe Get Hard turns 10 this year? Released in 2015, Etan Cohen’s outrageous directorial debut brought together two comedic heavyweights, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, for an over-the-top movie that tackled crime and prison prep with plenty of laughs.

The story centers on James King (Ferrell), a wealthy hedge fund manager who’s wrongly convicted and given 30 days to prepare for life behind bars in San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (formerly San Quentin State Prison).

In a desperate move, he turns to Darnell Lewis (Hart), a car wash owner he mistakenly believes has done time, for help on surviving the slammer. As Darnell puts James through a prison prep boot camp, they form an unlikely bond.

To celebrate the movie’s 10th anniversary, we thought we’d catch up with the cast (and a few scene-stealing favorites) to see where they’ve landed since Get Hard hit theaters.

The same year he starred in Get Hard, Will Ferrell received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was named British GQ‘s Comedian of the Year.

Over the next decade, the Golden Globe nominee kept busy with roles in Daddy’s Home (2015) and its 2017 sequel, the holiday musical Spirited (2022), Barbie (2023),Despicable Me 4 (2024), and You’re Cordially Invited (2025).

Up next for him is the Amazon Prime Video comedy Judgment Day, costarring Zac Efron and Regina Hall.

When not in front of the camera, Ferrell’s often behind it. He’s produced a number of acclaimed projects, having picked up four Emmys for his work on HBO’s Succession (2018–2023) and Live in Front of a Studio Audience (2019–2022).

His producing resume also includes Booksmart (2019), Dead to Me (2019–2022), Drunk History (2013–2019), The Menu (2022), and May December (2023).

Kevin Hart (Darnell Lewis)

Since Get Hard, Kevin Hart has led comedies like Central Intelligence (2016), voiced the crowd-pleasing Snowball in The Secret Life of Pets franchise (2016–present), and helped turn the Jumanji film series (2017–present) into box office gold.

He remains plenty busy. In 2024 alone, Hart headlined the Netflix heist flick Lift, starred in Borderlands, and led Peacock’s crime drama Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist.

Offscreen, Hart keeps the laughs coming with stand-up specials, national tours, and streaming fare like Die Hart (2020–2024), the semi-autobiographical Lil Kev (2025–present), and the talk show Hart to Heart (2021–present). He also launched the Laugh Out Loud Network in 2017.

In 2022, he tried his hand at fast food with Hart House, a vegan eatery designed to compete with big-name chains. It got off to a strong start, but all four California locations shut down by September 2024.

Hart also made headlines after stepping down as the host of the 2019 Academy Awards following backlash over homophobic tweets.

In the years since Get Hard became a box office hit, Coach legend Craig T. Nelson has stayed active on both the big and small screens. These days, he’s likely best known for his role as Dale Ballard on Young Sheldon (2017–2024) and its spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (2024–present).

Over the past decade, he starred in Book Club (2018) and its 2023 sequel, reprised his role as Mr. Incredible in The Incredibles 2 (2018), and took the lead in the 2025 drama Green and Gold.

That last project definitely hit close to home, seeing as Nelson is a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. He even sang the national anthem at Lambeau Field on Jan. 5, 2025.

Alison Brie (Alissa Barrow)

Most fans still remember Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on Mad Men (2007–2015) and the endlessly optimistic Annie Edison on Community (2009–2015), but she’s kept busy in the decade since Get Hard hit theaters.

She voiced Diane Nguyen on BoJack Horseman (2014–2020), and earned critical acclaim (plus Golden Globe and SAG nominations) for her role as wrestler Ruth Wilder on three seasons of Netflix’s GLOW (2017–2019).

On film, Brie has appeared in How to Be Single (2016), The Post (2017), Promising Young Woman (2020), and Happiest Season (2020), among others.

Additionally, she branched into writing and producing with projects like Horse Girl (2020), Spin Me Round (2022), and Somebody I Used to Know (2023), the latter of which she co-wrote with her husband, Dave Franco.

She has a jam-packed schedule ahead, with upcoming projects like the live-action Masters of the Universe, The Revisionist, and Together. The latter is a Sundance horror hit in which she and Franco portray a couple whose move to the country turns into a nightmarish, body-morphing love story.

Edwina Findley (Rita Lewis)

Edwina Findley has kept a full plate since Get Hard, showcasing her range in an array of shows and movies. She played Kelly Isaacs on more than 100 episodes of OWN drama If Loving You Is Wrong (2014–2020), and attracted attention in Free in Deed (2015), for which she was nominated for an Independent Spirit award.

Other credits include Goldie (2019), Blindfire (2020), Rogue Agent (2022), and The Power (2023), as well as Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes-produced The Residence (2025–present).

Since Get Hard, actor and Grammy-winning rapper Tip “T.I.” Harris has dropped several albums, including Dime Trap (2018) and The L.I.B.R.A. (2020). The multi-hyphenate also continued to flesh out his acting career with roles in Ant-Man (2015) and its 2018 sequel, Sleepless (2017), Dolemite Is My Name (2019), and Fear (2023).

Additionally, he appeared alongside his loved ones on a VH1 reality series, T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle, from 2018 to 2020. He’s also remained active behind the scenes with artist development and business ventures through his record label, Grand Hustle Records.

But the last decade hasn’t been without controversy for the rapper. In January 2024, he and his wife, Tiny, were sued for sexual assault. The case was dismissed last August.

Ariana Neal (Makayla Lewis)

Since playing Makayla, the daughter of Hart’s character, in Get Hard, Ariana Neal appeared in films like Mother’s Day (2016), Hidden Figures (2016), and the 2022 horror series Archive 81. Even though the show was critically acclaimed, Netflix didn’t pick it up for a second season.

Neal is currently enrolled at Columbia University as a film and political science double major. She’s expected to graduate in 2026.

Erick Chavarria (Cecelio)

Guatemalan actor Erick Chavarria played the gardener in Get Hard. Over the past decade, he appeared in films like Office Christmas Party (2016) and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016) and series such as The Grinder and On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019).

Greg Germann (Peter Penny)

Greg Germann has been a comedy staple for years, and worked with Ferrell prior to Get Hard in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006).

Since playing lawyer Peter Penny, Germann has focused mostly on TV, carving out a steady run of memorable roles on ABC shows like Once Upon a Time (2016), Grey’s Anatomy (2017-2025), and Will Trent (2023-2024).

Paul Ben-Victor (Gayle)

Paul Ben-Victor has always been one of those, “Oh hey, it’s that guy!” actors. Since Get Hard, his long career has only gotten more booked and busy. He’s popped up in numerous projects, from the zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet (2018) to Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (2019). More recently, he appeared on Hulu’s Pam & Tommy (2022) and the hit Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This (2024–present).

Ben-Victor’s not slowing down, either. He’ll soon join the DC Universe on HBO’s upcoming Lanterns (2026), where he’ll appear alongside Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as they take on the iconic Green Lantern roles of John Stewart and Hal Jordan, respectively.

Elliot Grey (Judge V. Carlyle)

Elliot Grey seems to have found his sweet spot in the courtroom. He played Judge V. Carlyle in Get Hard, and has gone to bang a gavel in projects like Claws (2018), Roe v. Wade (2019), and Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (2024), which reunited him with Hart. At this point, Grey is your guy if you need someone to sit on a bench and deliver a fake verdict.

Matt Walsh (Bathroom Stall Man)

When Get Hard hit theaters, Matt Walsh was already a familiar face due to his hilarious run as Mike McLintock on Veep (2012–2019), a role that earned him two Emmy nominations. Since then, he’s racked up roles in everything from Widows (2018) and Father of the Bride (2022) to Ghosts (2022–present), Manhunt (2024), and Novocaine (2025).

Walsh also gave reality TV a whirl, joining season 32 of Dancing With the Stars. Just five days before the premiere, he stepped back from the show in solidarity with the WGA strike. After a tentative deal was reached, he officially returned to the cast only to be the first eliminated.
