During a recent interview with MLB, Narváez gushed about his bond with Jason Varitek.

“He’s kind of like my second dad,” Narváez said. “He was the catcher for Boston for so many years. He’s still our captain. He’s there for everything. If you’re doing bad or if you’re doing good.”

Varitek spent his 15-year MLB career in Boston and caught four no-hitters for the Red Sox, was a three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion. The Red Sox haven’t officially named another captain since Varitek retired after the 2011 season.

On top of all the success he had as Boston’s catcher, Varitek has also helped Narváez — who was acquired from the New York Yankees in December — feel like he’s been part of the team longer than he actually has.

“In the game, before the game or after the game, I always come to see him,” Narváez said. “Now I feel home. But at the beginning, since Day 1, he was awesome with me. I’m really thankful for that.”

Narváez stepped into the starting catcher’s role after Connor Wong hit the injured list with a fractured finger in April. He has flourished and essentially taken over the position. Aside from calling a strong game behind the plate, the 26-year-old is slashing .279/.355/.458 (126 OPS+) with six home runs, 22 RBI and 14 doubles.
