May we interest you in some dingers? Wholesale, industrial-sized shipping containers of dingers, really. The AL East foes went all out in last weekend’s three-game series. New York won the opener 9-6; star batters Jazz Chisholm Jr., Paul Goldschmidt and Rafael Devers each went yard. Then Boston bounced back in the Saturday showcase, winning 10-7 behind five RBIs from Trevor Story. The Sox stole the rubber match in the Bronx on “Sunday Night Baseball.” That game was wild — eight combined homers and 49 total bases. Now it’s off to Fenway Park for the re-do.

Aaron Judge is essential summertime viewing as he goes for a batting Triple Crown. Coming into Friday, Judge tops baseball in all three slashing categories at .392/.488/.776. He’s also trying to become the first MLB player to hit .400 across a season since Red Sox luminary Ted Williams did it in 1941. Judge has a (comparatively) modest 31 homers in 107 games versus the Sox.

New York scores more runs per game than any AL team, and Boston is right behind the Yankees at No. 2. Alex Cora’s club is above league average in just about every significant offensive metric, but that also includes a league-most 650 strikeouts in 70 games.

Three elite starters are slated to go in this series. Fiery left-hander Garrett Crochet (6-4, 2.35 ERA, 110 Ks) looks to continue his strong Boston debut. He struck out nine Yankees in their last meeting, but also allowed six hits, five earned runs and a long ball from catcher Austin Wells.

Saturday’s showdown offers another top-tier southpaw, with Carlos Rodón on the bump in pinstripes. Like Crochet, Rodón has notched triple-digit strikeouts in the early going. And like Crochet, he was plagued by home runs in last weekend’s series. Kristian Campbell got the best of him with two outs in the fifth inning, and Carlos Narváez smacked a three-run shot in the sixth. Cy Young hopeful Max Fried closes out as Sunday’s probable starter for New York. He’s 9-1 with a sub-2 ERA and the single best fastball run value across MLB.

All-time fusion rotation (starters to pitch for both teams):

  • Roger Clemens (275 wins)
  • Red Ruffing (270 wins)
  • Herb Pennock (224 wins)
  • Waite Hoyt (167 wins)
  • Luis Tiant (143 wins)
