The game was scoreless at Kauffman Stadium, and Royals’ starter Seth Lugo had just been replaced – with runners at first and second, two out – when the rain began falling and tarp was rolled out.

Then 28 minutes later they were back.

Yankees’ starter Will Warren tossed five scoreless innings, and he did come out to start the sixth inning after the rain delay.

The Yanks’ bullpen was fortified with a fresh arm before the game, with Scott Effross called up from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and lefty Brent Headrick (who threw 23 pitches Wednesday) optioned.

A Yankees’ lineup without Aaron Judge, Austin Wells, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and DJ LeMahieu was seeking to complete a three-game sweep of the Royals before heading to Boston for a weekend series starting Friday night.

Judge was rested from the starting lineup for the first time this year; Chisholm Jr. exited Wednesday’s game due to a tight left groin, but said he felt fit enough to play.
