We Got A First Look At RESIDENT EVIL REQUIEM And It’s Horrifying

The ninth mainline game in Capcom’s iconic Resident Evil franchise has finally been revealed. During the Summer Game Fest showcase, the show ended with the reveal of Resident Evil Requiem. It follows a new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, an investigative reporter who’s also the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from 2003’s Resident Evil Outbreak.

It was definitely the star of the show, and luckily, FANGORIA had the opportunity to see some additional gameplay footage at Summer Game Fest, and it looks to be the scariest Resident Evil game yet.

The hands-off preview demo started with Grace strapped to a gurney upside down, the same as she was in the reveal trailer. In a cutscene, she manages to free herself, but now she’s in some dilapidated building, which seems to be the rundown Raccoon City Police Department, as shown in the reveal trailer. However, I wasn’t able to confirm this. This immediately reminded me of the Baker House from Resident Evil 7. It had the same claustrophobic feel, but was even scarier due to the pitch black hallways. Grace only had some red emergency lights on the ground to guide her.

Capcom found ways to create even more tension with the constant flickering lights in the hallway, as well as Grace’s constant shivering. I wasn’t sure if it was due to her nerves or if she was simply cold (or both), but it was very effective. Her shivering somehow transferred to me, and I felt nervous throughout the entire demonstration, even though I wasn’t directly controlling her.

The demo then faded to black and transported us to a different location in the building. This time, Grace has the Cherub Key, which lets her open a specific door. There’s also the sound of footsteps, and at this point, I was expecting some sort of Mr. X or Nemesis figure to step in. Additionally, Grace is able to grab a lighter and use it as a light source as she walks around.

She eventually finds a dead body, and out of nowhere, a giant human-like creature with surprisingly perfect teeth (which was shown at the very end of the reveal trailer) steps in and eats the poor guy’s head. The trailer only showed the bottom half of the monster’s face, but I got a good look at its full body. Half of its head is bandaged, and it’s wearing some sort of hospital gown. While it’s a big creature, it’s not as physically imposing as Mr. X, Nemesis, or even Lady Dimitrescu. Its creepy nature mostly has to do with how flexible it is, being able to slither like a snake.

That caused Grace to retreat in fear and shut the door behind her in a different room. However, the monster doesn’t come in at all, which left me perplexed. The demo then faded to black and transitioned one last time to a different scene of the game. Grace now has a screwdriver and is able to finally remove the fuse from an electrical box. Then, all of a sudden, the monster comes out of a hole in the ceiling, and the demo ends with the Resident Evil Requiem title card.

But there’s one last surprise. The entire demo was in first-person, like Resident Evil 7. However, you can actually change to a third-person perspective by selecting it in the settings menu. The rest of the audience cheered because while Resident Evil Village was also in first-person, a third-person camera wasn’t available until years later in an update. In Resident Evil Requiem, it looks like players will have that option from the start.

Resident Evil Requiem looks like it’s off to a great start. The horror and suspense are present in the building, and the monster really instills a sense of dread. I can’t wait to learn more about Grace herself, as well as the lore surrounding the RPD and the monster

Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
