After wrapping on the reboot last month, Bryan Cranston revealed why Erik Per Sullivan was “the only one who didn’t come back” to reprise his role as youngest son Dewey, the character he originated on the 2000-’06 Fox sitcom.
“It’s amazing how these boys who were my boys on that show are now around the same age I was when we first started, and they’ve got children of their own,” said Cranston on the Fly on the Wall podcast.
In addition to Cranston and Muniz’s return as dad Hal and middle child Malcolm, Jane Kaczmarek was confirmed to return as mom Lois in December. In March, the family was rounded out with Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield reprising their roles as Malcolm’s older brothers Francis and Reese, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the part of Dewey.

“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back,’” recalled Cranston. “He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic.’”

Ahead of the show’s 25th anniversary, the Disney+ revival was announced for a limited, four-episode run in December. Last month, Muniz celebrated wrapping the reboot after reprising the titular gifted child growing up with three brothers in a middle-class home.
From 20th Television and New Regency, the Malcolm In the Middle revival will feature Malcolm and his daughter (Keeley Karsten) as they are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.
