The cast also includes Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick and star of the recent Wes Anderson flick, The Phoenician Scheme, Mia Threapleton.
The historical drama is set in the 1870s and follows a group of young daughters of the American nouveau riche who head to London for debutante season in the hope of finding husbands.
In an interview with Vanity Fair this week, Leighton spoke about joining the series and her character, Nell, the biological mother of Nan.
She admitted: ‘Her advice isn’t necessarily advice I would give. The way she conducts herself or how she enters any given situation—in particular towards the end of the series—isn’t what I would do.
‘But I am living in this time period. I kept on going back to thinking about my own life, my own children, and being a mother.
‘I think that it’s universal and timeless to have an understanding about all of humanity and a mother’s deep, unbreakable love for their children.’
She added: ‘I just love that [the show] is exploring it for these women. I think Jinny’s storyline is one of the most accurate and heartbreaking depictions of abuse I’ve seen.
‘The way they carried out that storyline in the first season and in this one is unbelievable.’
