NiKo: “We need an undeserved break after such an underperformance here”

The unthinkable has happened as Falcons have been eliminated from the BLAST.tv Austin Major Stage Two following a 2-1 loss against Brazilian underdogs MIBR. As the most expensive and star-studded team in the Counter-Strike 2 landscape, many expected Falcons to challenge for the Major trophy in Austin especially have a strong season, however the opposite happened with the team utterly falling flat outside of the Top 16.

Following this shock loss, Dust2.us’ Jeffrey “Mnmzzz” Moore spoke to Nikola “NiKo” Kovač about the loss and why he thinks the event was such a disaster for the Saudi organization.

Multiple overtime wasn’t enough to take down MIBR and I don’t think we saw the same Falcons in Austin that we saw in Dallas. What do you think went so wrong here?

I have no idea, I wish I had an answer because we would have avoided the situation we were in. I don’t know, every game felt so hard to play and it was very hard to gain momentum for this and I’m not so sure what went wrong.

Definitely pistol rounds are something that really screwed us over this event. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind and yeah I don’t know. Inferno we lost a 5v3 in the end that we should’ve won even though it was a close game and it was tough for both teams.

We should’ve won in this moment and then who knows, but yeah.

You mentioned the pistol rounds, is there an explanation for why Falcons struggled with them so much in Austin?

I’m not sure. It’s definitely not acceptable to have this win rate in pistol rounds. I don’t really know what’s changed or why it went so wrong for us this event when it comes to pistol rounds but I don’t want to really put it all on pistol rounds.

It’s just one of the reasons why we didn’t advance to Stage Three so we just crumpled as a team. We were making rookie mistakes and forcing situations when we didn’t have to and that’s it.

We saw you underperform at this event and especially in the MIBR match. What do you attribute that to?

Honestly I don’t feel like I played too badly because it was hard to get into some of the halves and it was hard to get into the games. I had a bad start on Ancient T-side and I got traded a couple of times and on Nuke it was fine. Then on Inferno it was hard to… I was just moving left and right kind of not really taking duels, just rotating left and right so it was hard to get into the game.

But personally I don’t feel that I played badly even though the stats probably show different. I tried to be there for the team until the end and tried to help as much as I could and I think I can say I gave it my all at the end.

There’s been rumors swirling about what happens to this Falcons roster after the Major. Does the squad still have your full confidence heading into the off season?

I don’t really know and I don’t want to think about it. We were fully focused on this Major so I don’t really have any answer right now. Just we had a very long season and event after event, I don’t even know how many events we played this season.

We need an undeserved break after such an underperformance here and we’ll see how it’s going to pan out for next season.
