Evans was a competitive rugby player for most of his life. He began his professional career while playing at Wellington College in Berkshire, England. He went on to join the Glasgow Warriors as a winger from 2006 to 2010. Evans was also asked to play for Scotland’s national team 10 times, per his Champions speakers bio.
Evans’ rugby career came to a sudden end in February 2010 when he suffered a severe neck injury during the Six Nations game against Wales. After undergoing two neck and spine procedures, he learned that his injury was one millimeter from paralysis or death, according to The Scotsman.
“I sustained a double fracture-dislocation to the C5 and C7 regions of my spine in 2010,” he told Men’s Health U.K. in 2024. “I was playing for Scotland against Wales in the Six Nations and I was really fortunate because an injury of that magnitude, suffered on such a big stage, meant I had the very best personnel there to deal with it.”
In July 2010, Evans officially announced his retirement, which he called “a huge blow, mentally.”
“At the time, I was just so grateful not to be in a wheelchair,” he told the publication. “But a year or so after the injury, it really hit me that I was never going to play the game again — a game that I so dearly loved, and a game I’d worked my whole life for. I did struggle for a long time.”
Evans explained that for most of his life, “rugby was my identity,” so he struggled to find his new “purpose.”
“I was only 24 at the time of my injury and I’d just broken into the Scotland national team. I think I would have comfortably had that jersey for at least another 10 years,” he continued. “I just tried my best to remain focused on how incredibly lucky I was to even be walking and moving in a ‘normal’ capacity. That’s what helped me through the dark times.”
Evans now works in entertainment

Before his rugby injury, Evans was a member of the pop group Twen2y4Se7en and toured alongside the British pop group McFly and the British pop star Peter Andre, per ESPN.
After Evans was forced to retire in 2010, he started working as a broadcaster for ITV’s rugby coverage, per The Scotsman.
Evans later competed in the BBC dancing competition show Strictly Come Dancing in 2014. In 2016, he appeared on the survival competition show Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.
In 2019, he formed singing trio Try Star with fellow U.K. rugby players Levi Davis and Ben Foden, who competed with him on The X Factor: Celebrity.

Evans and Scherzinger met on the set of The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019.
During that season, Scherzinger served as one of three judges alongside Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. As part of Try Star, Evans competed on that season with a myriad of songs, including “No Diggity” by the Backstreet Boys, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “The Greatest Show” from The Greatest Showman film. Try Star was eliminated in the semi-final and placed fifth.
In 2021, Evans explained to The Sun that he didn’t initially think Scherzinger would be interested in him.
“It wasn’t even in my thought process to try it on with Nicole because it would have been unprofessional, and she’s so lovely and stunning in every possible way,” he shared. “I was just like, ‘She’s out of my league.’ It was only after we sang an awkward performance of ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ and she kindly saved us in the show that we, as a band, went up to her dressing room to thank her. That was the first time I met her, and I’ve never looked back.”

The couple made their official red carpet debut on Jan. 5, 2020, when they posed for photos at the Golden Globes afterparty at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Both Scherzinger and Evans later made their relationship Instagram official when they posted the same photo from the event.
Later that month, Scherzinger and Evans attended the Fox Winter TCA All-Star Party in Pasadena, Calif., with Scherzinger telling Extra that she “couldn’t be happier” in her new relationship.

In October 2023, Scherzinger shared that they were planning on having a wedding in her native Hawaii with a reception in Europe.
“The reception will be somewhere in Europe. Beyond that, I haven’t even thought about anything,” she said during an interview with radio host Chris Evans, who is her fiancé’s cousin. “We’re in love with Portugal obviously, so I think we would have a reception there maybe. I didn’t know Portugal before Thom introduced me to it. I’m in love with it.”
Scherzinger added that her grandfather is a bishop, and she’s “always wanted him to marry me.”

Over the years, Evans has publicly praised Scherzinger. In October 2021, he told The Sun that he “hit the jackpot” with her.
“Nobody is asking Nicole how she got with me because I’m massively punching (above my weight),” he said. “She’s so easy and fun to be around.”
Evans also expressed his gratitude for meeting Scherzinger “naturally,” rather than him “sliding into her DMs.”
“People always say, ‘When you know, you know’ and I can honestly say I’d never really had that moment,” he said. “But within the first couple of days with Nicole, it was just awesome and it has been awesome ever since.”
Evans has said that the proposal was “one of the best days of my life.”
“Getting married to her and starting a family is something I can’t wait for,” he told Men’s Health in 2024.

Throughout the show’s run, Evans attended several of her performances, including the Broadway premiere. He later shared snaps of them from an afterparty, writing, “I’m so proud of you @nicolescherzinger ❤️.”
He was also by her side when she won an Olivier Award in 2024, sharing how “proud” he was on Instagram.
“Words cannot express how proud I am of you my love,” he captioned a series of photos from the event. “The level of professionalism that you bring to everything that you do combined with your God given talent is truly awe inspiring to see … A true testament for all your relentless hard work and devotion to this role and NO ONE is more deserving of such a prestigious accolade.”
