The Cardinals host the Blue Jays at 6:45 p.m. Monday as the teams open a three-game series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Success for the right-hander Pallante (4-3, 4.91 ERA) depends on keeping teams grounded. Toronto, however, is among the better teams in baseball in avoiding groundballs.

In his three starts this season vs. teams in the bottom third of baseball in groundball rate, Pallante has a 6.35 ERA.

While Toronto sports a top-half offense, starting pitching has been a struggle for the Jays. Their 4.60 ERA from starting pitchers is 26th in baseball.

Pallante has been the Cardinals’ least valuable starting pitcher by a significant margin. After a strong first three starts, his 5.80 ERA over his last nine starts is third-worst among qualified starters across baseball in that span.

Right-hander Jose Berríos (2-2, 3.67 ERA), Toronto’s opening day starter, will take the hill Monday for the Jays. Berrios has a 2.25 ERA over his last four starts.

He went seven innings, allowing two hits and one run vs. the Cardinals last season in Toronto.

Before the game, the Cardinals sent right-handers Michael McGreevy and Matt Svanson to Triple-A Memphis and recalled righties Riley O’Brien and Chris Roycroft.

The Blue Jays are 35-30, tied for second in the American League East. Before a loss Sunday, Toronto had won nine of 10.

The Cardinals are 36-29, second in the National League Central, four games behind Chicago.

Injury report

Jordan Walker, OF (left wrist inflammation): The Cardinals plan for the young outfielder to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with a minor-league affiliate as the big-league team begins a road trip in Milwaukee. Walker’s assignment will be based on how he does with increased baseball activities this week, and that will include batting practice on the field. He felt strong and swung the bat without pain or limitations Monday. Updated June 9

Zach Thompson, LHP (shoulder, lat strain): Lefty has returned to Jupiter, Florida, and his throwing program there after going through a battery of tests and exams in St. Louis. Strengthening is the goal before advancing. Updated June 7
