The director of the National Economic Council took issue with the work government employees do, telling Fox Business the problem is that, though many are very skilled, they “are doing government work.”

The government employee in question, Kevin Hassett, appeared on Friday’s Kudlow, where Larry Kudlow noted to the director that the federal government has lost 59,000 workers since President Donald Trump took office. That is in large part due to Elon Musk, who as the head of the “Department of Government Efficiency,” oversaw mass terminations and buyouts in the federal workforce.
“And while that’s been happening, Kevin, private payrolls are now running ahead of their year-ago, 12-month average,” Kudlow said. “For example, this month private payrolls [are] up 140,000. The 12-month average for private payrolls is 122[,000]. So… the government stuff’s coming down, and the private stuff’s coming up.”
The host went on to say that “we’re seeing a shift in the economy.”

“Yeah, it’s a really profound shift in the economy,” Hassett echoed. “The federal government workers are, you know, they’re hard working, a lot of them are highly skilled. But they’re sitting doing government work that isn’t much value. And then when they lose their government job, which happened in the past because of state cuts, then it usually creates about two jobs – one for them and one for someone else – because actually, if you put them to work in the private sector, then it’s great for them and great for the private sector.”
Musk’s DOGE gutted various government agencies, laid off tens of thousands of employees, and froze congressionally appropriated funding. Despite Musk’s initial claim that he could “save” the government $2 trillion, the organization, the DOGE website lists just $180 billion. However, even this figure has been calculated using dubious math.
