Munjya placed Aditya Sarpotdar in the league of blockbuster directors. The horror-comedy set in Konkan made Sharvari and Abhay Verma overnight sensations. A year later, Aditya is putting all his focus on making Thama, the next Maddock Supernatural Universe film, worth the theatrical experience. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead, the romantic comedy releases on Diwali.
Thama, Munjya are different because…
In an interview with Zoom, Aditya said Munjya and Thama belong to the ‘Stree World’, but are different in genres and approach. The director said, “Thama is a love story. As you have seen all the other films in the Maddock Universe or the Stree World, this is very different and not a horror-comedy. It is a romantic comedy film with certain supernatural elements backing it. Vampire is a supernatural element; it is a love story between a human and a vampire. The larger genre is comedy, so it is fun and a love story through the lens of Maddock Universe. Stree, Bhediya and Munjya were front-footed horror that created that sense of fear. This is more of a romantic film. We felt enough horror comedies were delivered at Maddock, we wanted to deviate a bit but stay in the world by exploring other genres as well.”

Mythical love story
While Munjya was deeply rooted in folklore, Thama is a mythical romantic comedy, added Sarpotdar. He shared, “Thama is wider . Munjya was more local because it was married to a folklorish character, and it came from the heartland of Konkan, where Munjya was known to be from. As Munjya was folklorish, Thama has mythical references. More than folklore, it draws references from mythical characters, and because of this, you will understand how things come together.”
Paresh Rawal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are joining Ayushmann and Rashmika in Thama.
