History

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina exploded for season highs in nearly every offensive category and clinched its sixth 50-win season in program history with an 18-7 rout of East Carolina in front of a record crowd of 6,423 fans Saturday night at Springs Brooks Stadium in the NCAA Conway Regional.

The Chanticleers (50-11), the No. 13 national seed, slugged four home runs, racked up 20 hits, and scored multiple runs in four straight innings from the sixth through the ninth to pull away from the No. 17-ranked Pirates. The 18 runs marked Coastal’s highest output in an NCAA Regional game since posting a program-record 25 against Stony Brook in 2010.

Colby Thorndyke blasted two home runs and drove in a career-high six runs to lead the offensive onslaught. Blagen Pado went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBIs, while Sebastian Alexander had four hits and four RBIs, including a solo homer in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth.

Starter Jacob Morrison allowed four runs over 5.0 innings walked none, struck out five and did not factor in the decision. The Chants turned three double plays and got 4.0 innings of relief from Matthew Potok and Darin Horn to close it out. Potok picked up the win and moved to 3-1 on the season.

Coastal advances to Sunday night’s winner’s bracket final and will face the winner of Sunday afternoon’s Florida-East Carolina elimination game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.

Notebook
Offensive Explosion: The Chanticleers set season highs for: Runs (18), Hits (20), Home runs (4) and RBIs (17)

Golden Season: With the win tonight, Coastal Carolina clinches the program’s sixth 50-win season and first since 2016 (55-18). The Chants (50-11) also crossed the 50-win plateau in 2005 (50-16), 2007 (50-13), 2008 (50-14) and 2010 (55-10).

Packing Them In: Coastal Carolina set the Springs Brooks Stadium attendance for the second-straight game with a crowd of 6,423 Saturday night. Friday night’s game had 5,656 tickets sold. Seven of the program’s top 10 crowds have been set this season.

Triple Dipping: Colby Thorndyke homered for the second-straight game, opening the scoring with a solo blast to right field in the top of the second. He followed it up with a towering, bases-clearing moonshot to right field in the top of the seventh — his first career grand slam — to give Coastal a 9-5 lead. He hit an opposite-field shot on Friday night. He went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI.

Stacking the Box Score: Every starter reached base at least once. Alexander (4-for-5), Pado (4-for-6), Bodine (3-for-7), and Sykes (2-for-4) all had multi-hit nights.

Up Next: Coastal Carolina will play in a regional final game for the third-straight season, facing the winner of the ECU-Florida elimination game at 6 p.m. ET Sunday in Springs Brooks Stadium. The opponent will be determined by the result of Sunday’s 1 p.m. game between Florida and East Carolina.
