‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ Heads to VOD After Earning Just $5M and a 14% RT Score — World of Reel

Since I was at Cannes, which is when Trey Edward Shults’ “Hurry Up Tomorrow” screened, I’ll have to catch up with it digitally. That said, I still hold out hope that it’s, at the very least, an interesting film. There’s something inherently compelling about a movie that’s provoked such intensely vitriolic reactions.

Apparently, I won’t have to wait long: “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is set to hit VOD on June 6, that’s next week, just 22 days after its initial theatrical release. The reviews? Disastrous. 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 29 on Metacritic. The box office has been even worse — a mere $5M grossed worldwide.

Some of the backlash likely stems from the sheer dislike The Weeknd seems to generate in certain circles, especially after the trainwreck that was HBO’s “The Idol.” But to be fair, the “Hurry Up Tomorrow” trailers teased something bold and distinctive. Shults has real talent — “Krisha” proved that. He’s not a journeyman; he swings big.

So — who’s seen it? Did it merit the toxic reviews? Or is this just another high-profile swing that critics were eager to pounce on?
