He only won $799, but it was enough for Tyler Griffith, a criminal forensic scientist originally from Sturgis in St. Joseph County, to become the new “Jeopardy” champion yesterday.

Griffith took on Alice Welch from New York and Thomas Sweeney from Ohio in the game of questions and answers airing on Wednesday, May 28.

JEOPARDY ROUND

Griffith got off to a great start, landing on the only Daily Double of the round with the very first clue chosen. What are the odds? He got the clue correct for $1,000.

Welch landed on the second Daily Double with already a commanding lead, but she got also the clue wrong, opening the door for the others to possibly make a comeback.

Sweeney took advantage and went on a string of correct clues, taking the lead at the end of the round with $8,800. Welch was in second with $8,200 followed by Griffith with $5,400.

The answer: A fake speedometer was used in this make of car from a 1980s movie since the actual car’s speedometer didn’t go high enough.

The clue: What is a DeLorean.

Griffith got it correct and went up to $8,801. Welch also got it correct, taking her to $11,601. Sweeney got it correct, too and became the new “Jeopardy” champion with $16,401.
