Spectrum confirmed to KCTV5 News that on Thursday afternoon, May 29, another fiber cut by vandals impacted some customers in the Kansas City area. Service had been restored earlier in the evening.

Spectrum noted that crews quickly responded to the area and began the necessary repairs. In this case, the location of the vandalism was near trees, train tracks and terrain that is difficult to access.

Company leaders noted that most fiber optic cables contain several strands – sometimes dozens or hundreds – and the volume of these impacts the duration of the outage as each strand has to be reconnected. This also explains why some customers have their service restored before others do.

“These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services,” a Spectrum spokesperson said. “We will work with the appropriate law enforcement partners on this crime and are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with information about the crime should report it to Spectrum at 833-404-TIPS.
