Hawn, 79, spoke to her children Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson and Wyatt Russell’s success as actors during a moderated Q&A before a screening of her 1974 movie The Sugarland Express at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 29.
“It feels really good. More than good,” the Oscar winner said, when asked how it feels that her three children have followed her and longtime partner Kurt Russell’s career path. “What feels good is that they’re amazing human beings. They happen to be talented. They’re great humans, all of them. And all my grandchildren — now I have eight — and they’re great humans.”
Hawn shares son Wyatt, 38, with Kurt, 74, whom she has been in a relationship with since 1983. Kurt has been a father figure to Kate, 46, and Oliver, 48, since he and Goldie’s relationship began; Goldie divorced from Kate and Oliver’s father, Bill Hudson, in 1982. (Kurt is also a father to his older son, Boston, whom he shares with ex-wife Season Hubley.)

“I think that someone asked me about a legacy, and they said, well, what would your legacy be? This foundation that you created? I said, ‘That’s my gift. My legacy are my children,’ ” Goldie told an audience of some 400 people before the screening.

Hawn’s daughter Kate is an Oscar-nominated actress known best for her roles in Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days; she most recently starred in the basketball-themed Netflix series Running Point. Oliver, meanwhile, costarred with Goldie and Kurt in 2018’s The Christmas Chronicles and more recently appeared in the series The Cleaning Lady, And Just Like That… and Unprisoned. Wyatt costarred in Marvel Studios’ recent hit Thunderbolts* and even worked with his father when they played two versions of the same character at different ages in Apple TV+’s 2024 series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
“That’s what you got to do, and you got to do it right. And I thought it’s probably the only thing I could ever fail at,” Hawn said of parenting during the Q&A. “Failure’s not a bad thing. We learn a lot from it, but not when you fail your children. So I love that I have the best, amazing — and I’m not kidding — kind, loving, smart, talented children, but they really have their eye on the right ball.”

When Hawn was asked whether she offered her children advice when they decided to pursue acting, she said, “No, they have to cut their own way.”
“They don’t want advice from their parents. Who does?” she said, recalling that she received “too much advice” from her own father when she began working in show business herself.
“Also, they’re doing it on their own. I mean, who doesn’t want to be bigger and better than their parents?” Hawn added. “That’s the whole idea. The fact that we supersede our parents, that’s what we’re supposed to do. So we wanted that. Kurt and I wanted that. And so when we look at it, we go, ‘Oh my God, this is just so awesome.’ “
